Smart home technology company AlertME will offer personal energy efficiency advice to British Gas customers who own new smart meters.

The service is being trialled in up to 10,000 homes in the summer, before being rolled out to more locations from autumn onwards. As a result of the partnership, data from smart meters will be converted into personalised data that could allow consumers to save millions of pounds.

AlertMe chief executive officer Mary Turner said: "We can take the smart meter information, put it in context and make the most relevant recommendations to help customers make simple decisions that can save them a lot of money."

Ms Turner explained that the deal will allow customers to get "more than just an accurate bill" from their smart meters.

The agreement could be welcome news for consumers, after a Gocompare.com study found that 36 per cent of people find their electricity bills difficult to understand.
