Brown wood is making a return as an interior design material and could even be used as a gas fire surround.

Susan Llewellyn, founder of the Susan Llewellyn Academy of Interior Design, said that timber is still a popular choice among those who are looking to renovate their property.

"Brown wood went out for some time and was not particularly well thought of, but I think it is coming back because of the quality of the making," she noted.

Ms Llewellyn went on to say that different finishes are now being used to use this material in different ways.

The interior design expert pointed towards Marten Baas, who became a favourite at the Milan Furniture Fair for taking old wooden furniture and torching it, before setting it in a poly-resin.

Other materials which are popular as a gas fireplace surround include veneered wood, pine and mahogany, while granite will provide a property with a dark, sleek style ideal for a modern home.
