Wadebridge may become an eco-friendly centre of excellence as part of new proposals.

Plans have begun to develop a low-carbon enterprise zone in the town, with the idea coming from social enterprise the Wadebridge Renewable Energy Network in collaboration with Wadebridge and District Chamber of Commerce and Cornwall Council, according to the Cornish Guardian.

Wadebridge Renewable Energy Network chairman professor Stephen Frankel told the news provider: "Modern communications mean that there's no reason these facilities can't be built here. The basic point is that distance is dead and that means there's no barrier to doing something really world class right here."

Professor Frankel explained that energy sources such as biomass offer a "real source of wealth".

Last month, the government outlined plans to reduce emissions caused by heating homes and businesses.

The Heat Strategy will investigate how properties across the country's sectors are heated in order to look at future policy options.
