The blue tit has been found to be the most populous garden bird in Reading.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds' (RSPB) Big Garden Birdwatch found that there was an average of 2.6 of this variety per garden.

Along with other pigeons, blackbirds and starlings flying around properties and venturing on to rooftops, homeowners need to make sure that they have a chimney cowl installed to prevent them from falling down the flue.

The study by the RSPB revealed that blackbird numbers in gardens were downby 22 per cent as they were able to find food in the countryside thanks to mild weather.

The start of spring has seen a return of birdlife to the garden, despite the chilly weather conditions.

Homeowners can play their part in making their green space more inviting to winged friends by constructing or buying a bird table and hanging up nut bags, while a box could even see them take refuge and set up a nest.
