Chimney Installation

There are a number of ways to install the system.  A correct installation is important to prevent chimney fires and to help ensure that smoke is quickly removed from the building. The correct method of installing stove pipes will depend on the architectural features of the building, as well as whether or not there is a masonry chimney already installed. But, whatever the specific circumstances, there are some standard guidelines that every installation should follow:

  • The flue pipe should only be used as a connecting piece between your stove or appliance and the chimney stack.
  • They should never pass through walls, ceilings, floors or windows. Other products should be used for this purpose, such as the Twin Wall Insulated flue.
  • Avoid bends in your pipe if possible; the fewer bends, the better the upwards draft will be. UK Building Regulations and HETAS recommend no more than 4 - 45° bends in any one system.
  • When installing remember that the taller the chimney, the better the draft will be.
  • After installing, be sure to also install a chimney cowl to the top of the chimney flue to prevent animals and rain from entering the chimney and to further improve an upwards draft (Rotorvent).

Your Questions Answered

What is flue pipe made of?

Its's known as Vitreous enamel and is manufactured from single wall 1.00 mm thick carbon steel, with a heat resistant enamel coating of powder coated glass particles that have been fused at high temperature to make a protective coating.

How do you seal a flue pipe?

It should be sealed with high temperature silicon sealant or fire cement.

How long should my chimney flue pipe be?

It should be as short as possible to connect your stove to the chimney. Longer lengths will allow heat to escape, cooling the flue gases with the result that the chimney won't draw as well. To that end, we recommend your installation is designed so that the it is no longer than 1500mm

What kind of pipework do you use for a log burner wood stove?

For a log burner stove, use vitreous enamel.

Can you cut vitreous flue?

While we recommend purchasing the correct lengths for your project, it is possible to cut if neccesary with an angle grinder or hacksaw.

How do you connect a flexible chimney flue liner to a stove pipe?

The best way is to use an appropriate sized flue to stove adaptor to connect to your chimney liner.

Are flue pipes available in stainless steel?

Yes, as well as matt black we stock 316 grade stainless steel finish for gas, oil, solid and multi-fuel installations.
