A chimney fire in Massachusetts, USA has caused severe damage, highlighting the importance of having well maintained flue accessories.

The fire transpired at a home in Spencer, with fire chiefs saying that the house's occupants were fortunate to escape, according to the Telegram.

Smoke detectors within the house were not functioning properly, which led to the fire spreading to the second floor.

Fire chief Robert Parsons told the newspaper: "There was extensive damage on the first floor, and the fire burned right through the joists."

Also, chimney fires have not only been prevalent on US shores, as a British authority last month warned homeowners to take measures that would decrease chimney fire dangers.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service informed homeowners that they should monitor the condition of their chimneys and ensure that they are swept regularly.

This came after the service was called out to three separate chimney fires within an hour in late September.
