Extra accident and emergency (A&E) staff were brought into hospitals in Surrey and south London during the Easter weekend to deal with injuries sustained from DIY work.

Epsom and St Helier NHS noted that the bank holiday weekend was a popular time for people carrying out gardening and DIY work, but told the BBC that individuals should ensure that they keep themselves safe.

Dr Carole Ann Johnson, lead doctor for A&E, told the news provider: "Lots of people want to get going with their home improvements, gardening and spring cleaning.

"Unfortunately, a lot of DIY and gardening requires the use of tools which, when not used properly, can end in disaster."

While there are many dangers to DIY work, Jason Orme, editor at Homebuilding & Renovating, has stated that home improvements can allow people to save money.

Mr Orme also remarked that those who are seeking professionals should try to find people with high recommendations.
