Homeowners with wood-burning stoves and fires must take adequate steps to reduce the risk of a fire starting in the house from the appliance.

Tom, from Clean Energy Durham, claims that combustion safety tips are something everyone should be aware of, as they could save lives

One of the things homeowners must ensure is that flue liners for woodburners are open each time the stove or fire is in use, otherwise the consequences could be serious.

"Make sure fireplace flues are properly open when in operation and that the visible combustion products are drafting up [the] chimney. Remember to close the flue when done to prevent energy loss," Tom added.

He went on to say that by following the correct safety procedures, homeowners can really enjoy their wood-burning stoves.

US Inspect recently made a similar point, stating that flue liners for woodburners must be open whenever the stove is in use to allow poisonous gases to escape.
