British Energy officials have visited the US to explain the benefits of the upcoming Green Deal scheme.

The programme aims to persuade residents to insulate buildings and boost their energy efficiency and Gregory Barker, the minister of state for energy, noted at a World Affairs Councils luncheon that the project could reduce energy imports by $5 billion (£3.1 billion) a year.

"In the UK, our flagship policy is the Green Deal. It's a self-financing home improvement scheme to bring our buildings up to scratch," Mr Barker explained.

He also described the initiative as the most comprehensive energy saving plan in the world.

Although the Green Deal could bring many benefits to residents, Superglass has raised concerns over the scheme.

The firm believes that the initiative's impact on its business is very difficult to estimate.

It has also warned that a smooth transition is required in order for the scheme to be a success.
