Couples who notice that their roof is leaking should hire a chimney professional to check around the structure, as there is a high chance that the fault lies there.
JayDee said in an entry on Article Resource that there are five places on the roof which are susceptible to damage and the chimney is one of the main ones.
The problem could be worn out counter flashings which can allow water to trickle directly down the chimney.
According to the writer, this is a frequent problem when a property has had a new roof fitted and there is no counter flashing to provide suitable protection.
"The chimney cap or mortar can be cracked or just worn away, the holes appear and as a result the chimney is barrelling or falling apart," JayDee said.
