Completing home improvements can help to transform the minds of residents, one specialist has suggested.

Dr David Lewis, a chartered psychologist and founder and director of research at Mindlab International, advised that bedrooms which are bright and cheerful give people more chance of being in a good mood, especially when compared to living spaces that are tired and shabby.

"The idea of the home being transformed is a very powerful, emotional thing for people in this country. Home is where the heart is and where you feel safe after a hard day at work. It's where you can kick your shoes off and feel safe and secure," Dr Lewis noted.

The topic of DIY was also highlighted by Homebuilding & Renovating Magazine representative Jason Orme recently, who advised that loft conversions can help people to maximise the value of their properties.

He added that redecorating can also help to increase the value of homes.
