There are many improvements which can be made to the energy market so that customers are getting a fairer deal when it comes to their heating bills.

Adam Scorer, director of policy and external affairs at Consumer Focus, said that the recent report from the IPPR, titled The True Cost of Energy, raised a number of important questions about the competitiveness of the sector.

"A good start would be to ensure that smaller suppliers can compete with the big six on a level playing field. Customers also need to know that suppliers are really competing for their business by passing on efficiencies and wholesale cuts, as well as ensuring customer service is first rate," he stated.

Mr Scorer went on to say that the energy and heating market needs to "serve everyone not just a minority of pro-active switchers".

IPPR's report revealed that the gap between the "true cost" of energy and what consumers pay will rise to £2 billion by 2020.
