Masonry chimneys 'often micro fracture'

Chimney repairmen should inspect the surrounding brickwork on masonry chimneys for micro fractures, which are a common occurrence during cold winters.

Howard Rowell, from the Royal Chimney Service in Milwaukee, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that voids in the chimney system can exacerbate this problem and it is important that it is dealt with as swiftly as possible.

"To correct the problem involves rebuilding the chimney with new brick and addressing the root cause of voids within the system," he stated.

Those planning to switch from a woodburner to gas should use an internal video scan of the chimney to identify any problems before changing, which could save them significant amounts of money.

According to Fireplace Village, chimney flues are the areas which require the most maintenance and repair professionals should inspect them thoroughly to ensure that they are fit for purpose and do not pose a threat to people's health.
