More money is to be invested in home heating in East Devon, after the local authority was given new financial freedom.

East Devon District Council will be able to make improvements to homes because its loan repayment is lower than the government subsidy would have been.

As a result, the area's £6 million subsidy payment has been replaced by a £3.3 million payment of interest, with £2 million of this being used to bolster housing stock.

Councillor Miss Jill Elson, cabinet member for sustainable homes and communities, said: "We will be investing more money in new kitchens, doors and heating systems, as well as initiatives to provide affordable warmth and energy efficiency in homes."

Ms Elson added that sheltered housing upgrades and improvements to car parking will also be made.

Derrick Wilkinson, director at Gr33n, recently advised that sustainable home improvements can be a savvy investment for property owners.

Mr Wilkinson also noted that residents are now placing more focus on the efficiency of their house.
