A mother and baby had a lucky escape recently after their gas fire began leaking carbon monoxide.

Gemma Vint, her mother and her 11-week-old son Beau-Dylan were relaxing at home when a carbon monoxide alarm sounded, thisishullandeastriding.co.uk reports.

The cause of the leak was poor ventilation, highlighting the importance of having flue liners for gas fires inspected by a seasoned professional.

Ms Vint said that she had used the system for the first time and became alarmed when she noticed a strange odour.

A spokesman for Humberside Fire and Rescue Service told the newspaper that the family had been lucky.

"Carbon monoxide is extremely dangerous and this incident highlights the need for a carbon monoxide alarm in addition to a smoke alarm if people have gas appliances," the representative added.

Gordon Easingwood, a buildings services engineer, said in an article for Helium.com that students and indeed anyone living in rented accommodation need to be aware of the dangers posed by carbon monoxide and take appropriate steps to ensure their health is not in danger.
