Homeowners should look at how they are using their gas in order to save on their monthly bills, one expert has recommended.

As well as this, it is important for residents to consider how they use electricity and water, as these are the sources that are most commonly utilised, a design expert has highlighted.

Oliver Heath, eco design consultant at Oliverheath.com, advised that changing home appliances can also help people to reduce their bills.

"Your fridge freezer is on all the time, [so] you should buy the most energy efficient one you can - because as soon as you get it home you are going to be paying for it. You can [also] get A-rated ovens and low-flow taps," Mr Heath said.

Energy efficiency has also been addressed by HomeSun's Daniel Green, who claimed that it is crucial that the efficiency of Britain's housing stock is improved, as over 20 per cent of the country's emissions are coming from homes.
