A Staffordshire takeaway could be forced to close after it was refused permission to open after 11pm.

Y2K, which is owned by Ashiq Hussain, wants to be able to open until the early hours on Friday and Saturday nights and he has sought approval from Newcastle Borough Council's licensing sub-committee.

Residents have previously complained about late-night noise and smells coming from the premises' ventilation system, according to ThisisStaffordshire.co.uk.

However, failure to gain permission could lead the 45-year-old to shut up shop for good.

"If it carries on like this, I will end up closing my business. At the moment, I have no money to cope with the bills. I bought the business 12 years ago for £60,000 and now it will be worth a lot less," he said.

Mr Hussain added that the council is wanting him to invest in an odour system, the same as those used at McDonald's or Burger King, at a cost of £18,000.

"All I'm asking for is six months of extended hours to raise some money to put towards this ventilation system," he said.

A ventilation system plays a crucial role in a cooking area, taking away smells and smoke and channelling them outside. It is also something that health and safety officials will look at when renewing licences.
