Those fitting woodburning stoves and flue liners for woodburners need to take extra precautions if their property also features a thatch roof.

Even those with existing woodburners should not presume that they are safe to use before they fire it up.

Speaking to the Leighton Buzzard Observer last week, NFU Mutual's rural affairs spokeswoman, Nicki Whittaker underlined the need for homeowners to exercise "a degree of caution" before lighting a woodburning stove.

She told the newspaper: "If you have not used your fire or wood-burner for a while you may want to consider speaking to a qualified Thatcher or fire safety officer, who can check your appliances are in good working order and provide further tips on preventative measures."

General chimney flues are also worth checking ahead of the winter period, in case there are any fire hazards, such as obstructions which got past a chimney cowl.

Examinations by a professional are particularly advisable if there is any sign of damage, or if you notice debris in the fireplace.
