Fitting a chimney cap 'requires several important measurements'

Homeowners who believe they have the knowledge to fit a chimney cap themselves must make sure they do not fall into the trap that many people do.

The Ask the Chimney Sweep blog stated that whether someone is installing a single flue or a multi-flue cap, the one measurement that consumers consistently overlook is that of the tile protruding from the system.

"If it is very tall you may need to make special arrangements to have a height extender installed," the source said.

Those with only one chimney flue only need to measure the dimensions at the top of the structure, while those with several flues will have to decide whether they want on multi-cap or separate ones.

According to a recent entry on the Goodman Air Conditioners blog, those with wood-burning stoves would benefit from chimney caps as they stop debris and dirt from getting into the system and accumulating.
