Council to fund chimney repair work

Homeowners in Marsh Street, Barrow who need a new flue liner for their gas fires can now have them paid for by the local authority.

The North West Evening Mail reports that residents in numbers 190 to 222 received a letter from Barrow Borough Council outlining the various home improvement jobs it was prepared to fund.

Among them are chimney and roof repairs as well as replacing windows and doors.

Chris Jones, housing renewal manager for the local authority, told the newspaper that such work needs to be completed swiftly.

"We always said we were going to do a number of repair schemes so this is part of the process ... [the houses] are dilapidated to a degree so the aim is to improve the quality of the area," he added.

One area where repair specialists are likely to have their hands full is with chimney flues, are these are the one area of the system which are most susceptible to problems, according to Fireplace Village.
