Chimney smoke has become a problem in Alaska, where pollution emitted from chimney cowls has caused an Alaskan borough to consider imposing fines for particularly heavy polluters.
According to Alaskan news source News Miner, laws within the borough require that it "shall not ban, prohibit, or fine residents for the use of home heating devices".
However, NewsMiner journalist Dermot Cole has said: "If the fumes from a chimney are making it impossible for a neighbour to enjoy his or her property, there should be a legal mechanism to balance these competing interests."
Meanwhile, in the UK, the Committee of Climate Change (CCC) has urged the government to offer funding for a new renewable heat incentive, which would help to reduce air pollution in the country.
CCC chairman Lord Adair Turner said that the government should focus on "implementation", which would help ensure that "the share of renewable energy can be increased rapidly".
