Two homeowners in Bournville have changed their property into one of the greenest houses in the UK by altering their flue accessories.

Chris and Harriet Martins have converted their home into a SuperHome by reducing its energy usage by 75 per cent. This has been achieved through several measures, including using a wood burning stove, according to GreenBuildingPress.co.uk.

John Alker from the UK Green Building Council told the website: "The Martin's home is a great example of what can be achieved with an older, energy intensive property to make it warmer, cheaper to run, and simply a better quality of home.

"We hope their experiences and the lessons they have learnt along the way will inspire their neighbours."

Residents who want to follow the Martins' lead by lowering their energy use can do so by installing glass doors on their fireplaces, which will stop warm air from escaping through a home's chimney system.
