A chimney and its associated flue accessories in Oswaldtwistle may be demolished after council officials expressed worries over its condition.

Representatives from Hyndburn Council were concerned over the state of the 100ft chimney, as it has still not been repaired from past fire damage, according to the Lancashire Telegraph.

Council leader Peter Britcliffe told the newspaper: "The state of the chimney is such that it needs either immediate remedial works or demolition.

"I am calling for the owners to come forward and take action. It is a disgraceful way for the local residents to be treated."

Mr Britcliffe added that homeowners in the area do not know if the structure is going to "fall down at any moment".

These comments follow a report from the Press and Journal, which revealed that many Scottish residents have disapproved of a planned waste treatment factory in Buchan.

The locals believe that its chimney could emit potentially toxic emissions.
