Bakers throughout the UK are hoping to make their flue accessories more efficient by partaking in energy-saving projects that are supported by the Carbon Trust.

One of the businesses involved in the scheme is Irwins Bakery in Northern Ireland, which is aiming to decrease its energy consumption by up to 13 per cent in the heating process, reports BakeryInfo.co.uk.

Ciaran Doherty, head of operations at Irwins Bakery, told the website: "Our interest is cost-driven, as energy costs are spiralling, but one of our key values is to be a responsible company, so this work is important for us."

The company will also work in conjunction with Maxon Combustion Systems to test combustion control equipment, which aims to decrease the amount of excess air used in bakery oven burners.

Schoolchildren in Aberdeen will benefit from new heating appliances, as the £7.4 million Kaimhill Primary School has been built with energy efficient systems by the Reorganise, Renovate and Rebuild partnership
