A chimney fire which displaced a US family from their home started in a fireplace before affecting flue accessories, fire officials say.

The blaze happened in the neighbourhood of Guadalupe Road in Mesa, Arizona, though the family inside the home were able to escape without any injuries, according to AzFamily.com.

Forrest Smith of the Mesa Fire Department said: "This time of year, when it's really cold, the first thing we think about is trying to get it as warm as possible inside."

This news comes after NFU Mutual urged owners of thatched properties to check the stability of their chimneys over the winter season.

Nicki Whittaker from NFU Mutual said that living under a thatched roof does not mean homeowners cannot benefit from a real fire and advised those using woodburners to exercise a certain degree of caution.

Ms Whittaker told property owners that they should consult specialised thatchers if they are uncertain about their home's safety.
