Plans for a household waste-burning incinerator in Croydon will save millions of pounds for taxpayers, it has been suggested.

South London Waste Partnership (SLWP) noted that public consultations will soon begin, after Viridor was chosen as its preferred bidder to operate the plant, which will boast many flue accessories, reports the Croydon Advertiser.

SLWP director Frank Smith told the newspaper: "Do we either continue to stick it [rubbish] in a big hole in the ground or generate energy from it?

"It is a no-brainer in terms of an environmentally sustainable solution."

Mr Smith went on to say that worries over the plant are unfounded, as the group is seeking to provide a solution that is safe.

Recently, the Haverhill Echo reported that grants of more than £9,000 have been allocated for improvements at Sawston Cinema.

This will lead to a new boiler being installed, thanks to money provided by South Cambridgeshire District Council.
