Chimney repair specialists should give homeowners advice on the flue accessories and other items they need to help prepare for the coming winter.

Sharon Manering, owner of Quince Designs, said that there are steps which people can take to reduce the risk of problems with the flue or any other part of the structure.

Among the tips she gives is making sure the chimney has a cap, which are installed from the outside and last a lifetime.

Ms Manering also recommended keeping dampers closed when the fire is not in use, as this will help stop animals or debris from falling into the system and blocking it.

She also suggested that homeowners need to hire a good chimney sweep to give the structure the once over and remove dangerous substances such as creosote.

Repairmen should stress the importance of hiring a chimney sweep, with Rosie Romero, writing for azcentral.com, saying that an inspection should take place every two years or so.
