Britons are spending more than £4.4 billion every year as a result of bodged DIY jobs, a study has found.

Over the Easter holidays, it is expected that over a third (36 per cent) of people will begin home improvements but, for ten per cent of UK residents, the efforts lead to expensive repair costs, according to a study from Allianz Your Cover Insurance.

Andy James, of Allianz Your Cover, said: "Unfortunately a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing so people should check they have adequate insurance to cover DIY damage so it doesn't cost more in the long run."

Spilling paint or glue was found to be Britons' number one DIY disaster, with 35 per cent of respondents citing the issue.

The research follows Ideal Home Improvement ambassador George Clarke's claim that more Britons are now carrying out DIY work.

Mr Clarke noted that the renovations are making a "big resurgence" in the UK at the moment.
