Leicestershire firm Energy Technologies Institute will team up with Hitachi to work on a £100 million Smart Systems and Heat Programme.
The scheme will last for five years and aims to develop a method of encouraging efficient use of energy, with Hitachi providing prowess in systems design, integration and execution.
Dr David Clarke, chief executive of the institute, which is based at Loughborough University, said: "Energy efficiency is a key priority the UK needs to address now if it is to meet the joint objectives of satisfying future customer demand and transitioning to a low carbon economy.
"This programme will help to develop and demonstrate the technologies required to achieve this."
Maria Wardrobe, director of external affairs at National Energy Action, recently spoke out about the UK's energy market, explaining that more can be done to simplify the range of tariffs available to consumers.
Ms Wardrobe also suggested that vulnerable people without internet access will be unable to take advantage of direct debit deals.
