Horsham's ERG has installed a new gas desulphurisation unit among the flue accessories at Ferrybridge Power station.

The system acts as a means of decreasing SO2 and particulate concentrations to necessary levels before the flue gas travels to a downstream post-combustion carbon capture unit, where 100 tonnes of carbon will be removed each day, according to Environmental-Expert.com.

This carbon capture project is a trial to evidence that the technology can create a one per cent side stream of flue gases from the power plant, which ensures that it is Europe's biggest project of its kind.

In the ERG system, there are two main components, which are a two stage "polishing" tray scrubber and a direct contact packed tower cooler.

Earlier this month, the Wisbech Standard detailed that an anaerobic digestion plant in Cambridgeshire may be extended before it opens.

The facility could be expanded to deal with up to 70,000 tonnes of waste.
