A dog came to a family's rescue in Malvern, Worcestershire after it noticed a chimney fire that was damaging flue accessories.

Mia, the 12-year-old dog, became agitated and constantly craved the attention of its owner Lorraine Page, before signalling Ms Page into the home's fire affected front room, according to the Malvern Gazette.

Ms Page told the newspaper that if the dog had not notified her of the blaze, the family may have "gone to bed without knowing about it".

Meanwhile, the Normandy Advertiser has advised its readers how to tackle the problem of soot and hazardous gases.

The website has said that chimney sweeping can help to eliminate chimney fire and hazardous carbon monoxide gas risks.

In addition, homeowners using heating appliances that use wood, coal or oil should ensure that that their chimneys are swept twice a year, while gas fire users have been told to sweep their chimneys once each year.
