A gas engineer has been hit with a fine after conducting a commercial catering gas installation at a local pub when he was not registered.

Phillip Payne from Ascot carried out repairs in the kitchen at The Swinley, but his efforts did not adhere to appropriate standards, meaning inhabitants were left in danger.

Mr Payne was registered with the Gas Safe Register to work on domestic boilers, although he was not legally permitted to do so on commercial catering installations.

Health and Safety Executive inspector Ray Kelly said: "Gas Safe Register is there to save lives: it ensures that gas engineers are fully trained and competent to carry out specific types of gas work, so it is vital that anyone working with gas appliances is registered."

The HSE has taken a strict stance on unlawful gas work, with the group earlier this month sentencing Bradford fitter Gareth Harland after he conducted repairs when he was not signed up to the Gas Safe Register.
