Gentoo has launched a selection of low energy homes, enabling residents to live sustainably without a traditional heating system.

The houses in Houghton-le-Spring are built meet German "PassivHaus" standards, with the development believed to be the first large-scale project in the UK to adhere to the regulations.

Peter Walls, chief executive of Gentoo, said: "Gentoo is proud to be known for pushing the boundaries of housing design and when our research into carbon reduction led us to the PassivHaus concept, we knew we needed to bring it to the region."

Mr Walls explained that the quality of the build was unique and represented  a challenge for everyone involved.

Flintshire is another area where sustainable homes are set to be launched.

Lovell's properties near Mold will boast technology that offers a more energy efficient environment for residents, with low energy Mitsubishi air source electric heating systems among the appliances installed at the premises.
