Homeowner 'rebuilds his own chimney'

Homeowners considering replacing the flue liner for their woodburning fires should bear in mind the depth of the task before undertaking it.

Peter Jacobs, from British Columbia, Canada said on his Mostly About Boats blog that his masonry chimney, which featured tile flue liners, gave up the ghost in 2005 and had to undergo extensive repair work.

At first he and his family decided that a modern heat pump was the best solution however, they soon realised how much they enjoyed having a woodburner to heat their home.

He then decided to repair the chimney and some of the tasks he completed include thoroughly cleaning out the whole structure, researching the most suitable chimney liner systems and fitting various pipes.

Mr Jacobs also fitted a chimney cap and an eight-inch square cleanout at the back of the structure to allow the cap to be removed when the chimney needs sweeping.

Dennis Moore Hopkins said in a recent entry on Ezine Articles that extensive chimney repairs should be carried out by an experienced professional who can complete the job safely.
