There is still ignorance among some landlords when it comes to ensuring that homes and flue accessories are gas-safe, one group has claimed.

Landlords are aware that they have to issue a landlord's certificate to the person inhabiting their property, but they often do not realise that gas checks are legally necessary, a spokesman from the Gas Safety Register has noted.

Jeff Learman, director of communications at Gas Safety Register, said that people renting from landlords should be aware of their rights.

Mr Learman explained: "We would suggest that we all have a responsibility to know that somebody coming into our home is Gas Safety registered. They [must] check their ID."

Last month, NFU Mutual advised homeowners that they should exercise caution when lighting open fires or woodburning stoves, as they can be extremely difficult to control if they catch fire.
