Installing flue liners for gas fires and other home improvements will often require consultation with a professional, to ensure regulatory compliance.

Any work that involves gas or electricity supply needs to be completed by a specialist, while many other jobs demand a high level of competency, according to the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC).

NHIC director Andrew Leech explained: "If you have done things on heating or electricity, when the solicitor asks for details of the improvements that you have made, he may also ask for certificates to show that you have made these improvements; if you haven't got certificates, then you won't sell the house."

Nearly two-thirds of Brits are planning to make significant home improvements to their property this year, according to research by MyHammer, published last week.

Over a third intend to refit their kitchen or bathrooms, which may require improvements to flue accessories.
