A 75-metre Lincolnshire chimney stack and its flue accessories could be made narrower as part of plans for a new £145 million rubbish incinerator.

The Waste Recyling Group has applied to make changes to the energy from waste facility in Paving Way, North Hykeham, with the stack's preferred diameter established at 2.3 metres rather than four metres, reports the Lincolnshire Echo.

It also stated: "A reduction in the diameter of the stack would reduce the level of engineering required (i.e. wind loading pressures), which in turn would reduce the amount of material required to construct the stack."

Environmental benefits would be gained from the site, as natural resources would not be depleted through the production of material, the Waste Recycling Group added.

A chimney in Atherton is also set to undergo changes, with This Is Lancashire reporting that the Ena Mill structure will be converted into a shopping outlet.
