Sunderland-based construction firm could be installing chimney cowls and flue accessories on the new Tyne Tunnel.
Brims will be fulfilling a family legacy with the construction, after it carried out works on the approach roads when the tunnel was first built in 1967, reports the Northern Echo.
Director of the construction firm, Richard Wood, told the newspaper: "Maybe in another 40 years our kids will be working on a third crossing, or maybe even giving our work a touch up."
The company will be constructing a ventilation building that will be responsible for drawing vehicle emissions out of the tunnel.
Development of the new tunnel is underway to cope with the growing customer demands on the 1967 version, which was designed to support a throughput of 24,000 vehicles a day, but currently manages 38,000 during peak periods.
The work includes a redesigned southern interchange, development of a new tolls plaza and refurbishment of the existing tunnel.
