People should make improvements to their flue accessories in order to remain warm in the winter season, a specialist has advised,

Measures such as fitting loft and cavity wall insulations can help people to escape the cold and can lead to significant financial savings, a spokesperson from the Double Glazing & Conservatory Ombudsman Scheme (DGCOS) has noted.

Tony Pickup, founder of the DGCOS, said: "The most cost-effective and efficient measures to keep people warm are adequate loft insulation and cavity wall insulation but it does vary house by house depending upon what they have had done in the past."

Mr Pickup also warned people that around 20 per cent of a property's heat is lost through windows and doors.

It follows a survey from DGCOS, which revealed that 61 per cent of homeowners replace their doors and windows as a means of lowering their energy bills.

The research also found that just under 50 per cent of 18-34 year-olds prioritise their home's appearance above energy savings.
