Plans have been approved for the Abernedd Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Plant to be built in Wales.
This move was initially proposed by Scottish and Southern Energy and will see flue accessories being used at the Baglan Bay Energy Park, which was formerly used as a chemical plant.
Energy minister Charles Hendry said: "Long term there is also a major opportunity for gas power stations like this to be fitted with abatement technology. This station will be built carbon capture ready, which means that eventually CO2 produced by the plant could be captured."
The new power station will also provide jobs and enhance the country's energy security, Mr Hendry added.
Experts at the Department of Energy and Climate Change also underlined the importance of gas in Britain's quest to become an energy-efficient economy, as more people in the heating industry attempt to cut down their carbon emissions.
