While most people would be shocked to find a rare owl nesting in their chimney flue accessories, this has become a common occurrence for one vet in Orange County, California.

In an interview with the Orange County Register, wildlife vet Dr Kristi Krause explained some of the unusual places she has found birds making a home.

She noted that rangers had once found three barn owls in a chimney flue, which appeared to have been hatched there.

One way to prevent rare or even common birds from roosting in your chimney is to get flue accessories regularly checked and cleaned by a qualified professional.

Chimney sweeps often recommend having at least an annual clear out, probably before and after the winter season, if fireplaces are intended for use during this period.

However, a more regular clearout is recommended for those who intend to make use of their chimneys more often, such as restaurant businesses.
