Housing and care provider Sanctuary Group is piloting a number of energy efficiency innovations among the flue accessories of its properties.

It is hoped that these will demonstrate how C02 emissions can be substantially reduced, bringing thousands of pounds of savings on an annual basis. The measures will be implemented at three care homes and three student halls of residence, reports 24 Dash.

Sanctuary Group's work to increase energy efficiency comes after it found that adding insulation, and fitting automatic taps and lighting could save over £50,000 a year.

Ian McDermott, Sanctuary Group's chief operating officer, said: "As a provider of housing and accommodation we realise there is much we can do to help Britain meet its CO2 emissions reduction targets."

Energy usage has also been put under the spotlight by Ofgem, with a spokesperson from the group saying that active engagement in the British energy market can help to make a difference to residents' energy bills.
