Proposals to knock down a chimney and flue accessories at the derelict Ricborough Power Station have been met with keenness by Sandwich Town Council.

Councillor Simon Leith described the former power station as a "hideous edifice," supporting plans for the demolition. In addition, councillor John Bragg referred to the structures as eyesores, reports Kent Online.

Mr Bragg explained: "I have been in communication with the people who made the planning application and they are all ready to go with the demolition.

"The place is wired up and waiting for the plans to be approved."

It follows a report for the Plymouth Herald, detailing that MW Environment Devonport Limited will begin building an incinerator in Plymouth next year.

Council chiefs hope that the structure's introduction will save taxpayers £275 million, while stopping cuts to frontline services. However, Plymouth Moor View Labour MP Alison Seabeck has condemned the plans, citing the damage that the plant could inflict on people's lives.
