Youngsters in Rochdale have urged the government to increase the energy efficiency of homes in Britain.

Two sisters, Mariyam and Kiran Iqbal, have called on people to offer their support to the Energy Bill Revolution campaign, which is an association of more than 80 charities that are endorsed by the National Children's Bureau, according to Rochdale Online.

Speaking to the news provider, 14-year-old Kiran said: "It is both disgraceful and disgusting that children have to live in such appalling conditions when the UK is in the top ten richest countries of the world."

She explained that it is the government's responsibility to care for UK residents, organise its priorities and focus on ending fuel poverty.

Recently, the Northern Echo reported that Darlington Borough Council is hoping to borrow £5 million in order to fund energy efficiency improvements in the town.

This money would be used to tackle fuel poverty and install energy saving technology in up to 1,500 Darlington properties.
