Siemens has collected an award for its work on ensuring health and safety measures were applied while workers used flue accessories at the Uskmouth power station in Newport.

The firm was honoured for its efforts at the DONG Energy plant during the National Joint Council (NJC) for Engineering and Construction Safety Awards. It was commended for its action in the Zero Harm programme in particular.

This scheme was introduced to form a world-class safety culture and instil individual awareness of safety within the company, backing a culture that prioritises the safety of employees.

Chairman of the NJC HSE committee Richard Ash said: "The Severn Power project was clearly a project which did this and where team work wasn't just a slogan. Siemens really lived it."

The award is based on several factors, including safety statistics, initiatives, systems, control measures and communication.

Other initiatives that helped Siemens to collect the award ranged from active participation in safety committees, management meetings and safety forums.
