Homeowners in Scunthorpe, Ashby and Bottesford could be in danger of losing money if they do not manage their flue accessories properly.

This is because smog regulations are still in place in these areas, with people being advised to check if they are living in a designated smoke control region prior to using any heating appliances that emit smoke.

Stephen Coulman, environmental health manager at North Lincolnshire Council, said: "Before you go out and buy alternative heating, such as a wood burning stove, make sure that you don't live in a smoke control area. If you do, then make sure you are aware of the rules you need to follow."

For people living in a smoke control area, it is an offence to produce smoke from a domestic chimney of a building, furnace or boiler.

The current maximum fine that can be issued for people breaking the smog regulations is £1,000.
