Two council tenants from South Tyneside have been nationally acknowledged for their efforts to combat fuel poverty in the area.
South Shields residents Sharon Smith and Sarah Collins were named as two of the UK's Heat Heroes in an awards programme operated by National Energy Action and ScottishPower, which aims to recognise people who go "above and beyond" to help others heat their homes.
Commenting on her award, Ms Smith said: "I was over the moon when I found out that we had won the award and when we were presented with the award it was an experience in itself."
She emphasised that it is very rewarding to be able to help people deal with fuel firms.
The Energy Saving Trust recently highlighted the importance of tackling fuel poverty, with the organisation stating that the problem has become one of the biggest modern-day social issues.
Mr Weatherall from the group underlined that a sophisticated area-based analysis is necessary in order for energy schemes to be beneficial.
