People who have wood burning stoves should stock up on fuel as soon as possible, it has been advised.

Homeowners with a wood burning stove should stock up on firewood now, one tree surgeon has advised.

People with an open fire and flue liners for wood burners must be prepared well in advance of when they will need the logs, said Lincolnshire tree surgeon James W Kendall.

"If you're ordering for your first winter and you're not sure how much you’re going to need, talk to either the supplier of your wood-burner, or your local tree surgeon, who may well also supply seasoned firewood and ready cut logs," he suggested.

The amount needed will depend on things such as the size of the house and wood burner, the efficiency of the stove and the level of insulation at the property, Mr Kendall pointed out.

Seasoned wood is the best option as it produces more heat and it should be stored off the ground so air can circulate and under cover to protect it from the rain.

The Ask the Chimney Sweep blog has also given recommendations for the best firewood.

It too highlighted the importance of seasoning and said this type of wood will burn hotter, although not as long as hardwood.
