Stricter planning directions have now been scheduled for the Avenues conservation area in Hull, including guidance on how to install and operate flue accessories.

A feedback period of 21 days will end before the regulations can be enforced, but they are expected to concern features such as front doors, porches, roofs, bargeboards and chimney stacks, reports the Hull Daily Mail.

The Avenues and Pearson Park Residents' Association called for the new planning directions.

Stephanie Wilson, the group's chairwoman, told the newspaper: "If we get the final 'yes' we will be very pleased, especially after all the hard work that has gone into this.

"Although the amount of people who responded to the questionnaire was low, about 75 per cent of those who did reply were in favour."

Bath will also benefit from repair work, with Waterscape reporting that a chimney at the Bath Flight of Locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal will be renovated in a project spearheaded by British Waterways.
