People with a traditional chimney should ensure it is fit for use this autumn, it has been said.
Homeowners who make use of their chimney should ensure it is ready before lighting up the fire this autumn.
Brits have been urged to employ the services of a chimney sweep so their fire burns as efficiently as possible and their home remains safe, the Tewkesbury Admag reported.
Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service has warned people that soot and smoke from a chimney fire can cause extensive damage to the property or even destroy a home completely.
"We tend to experience a seasonal rise in chimney fires from this time of year onwards so we want to encourage anyone burning coal, logs, smokeless fuel or oil to act now to keep their homes safe this winter," said fire safety adviser Julie Udall.
The service also encouraged the use of a fire guard at all times and reminded residents to put a fire out completely before going to bed or leaving the house.
People who burn wood should also be stocking up on logs now to ensure they are well prepared for the cold nights.
